Sometimes we describe our rugs as paintings for the floor. We use this term when we think the design and quality of the rug is quite simply a work of art - and that's why we have a collection called Floor Paintings.

The colour experts Pantone have announced the most up and coming colours for the new autumn/winter season. So for those people who love to be bang on trend with their interior design schemes, we've found several rugs that feature the new season's must have colours. 

Grenadine is a powerful, evocative, dynamic red and we have found just the right shade in our Gabbeh collection. This range is handmade in North Eastern India and this particular colour is just what you need to inject a pop of colour to your room.  



Autumn Maple is a quintessential autumn colour, introducing warmth into your colour scheme. This rug is also taken from our Gabbeh collection.

Neutral grey is described as the standard bearer of all neutrals and we have to agree. Many people don't appreciate just what a flexible and yes, neutral colour  grey is.  It works well in a minimalist, neutral interior scheme but will also provide the calm tone for colours such as navy blue.  It's one of our favourites which is why you can find a really wide collection of grey rugs. How to create the Victorian look in your own home

With the hit ITV programme 'Victoria' back on our screens, plus the release of a new lavish film 'Victoria and Abdul' we expect to see many people enquiring about our traditional rugs as they seek to create a Victorian look in their own home.   

Often the biggest stars of these historical TV and film dramas are the locations and set designs which inspire people to recreate the Victorian style - however, fans of minimalist design should look away now! 

Thanks to the industrial revolution and mass production, the middle classes had the chance to emulate aristocratic homes for the first time - this meant filling every space in every room with accessories, furniture and fabrics -  the more you had the more wealth you had.  

The Victorians were an eclectic bunch and co-ordination was not a high priority. Excessive ornamentation, heavy upholstered furniture, patterned wallpapers and fabrics were prevalent in a range of styles from the gothic to the frivolous feminine rococo.  It was a time of Empire and so Indian and Oriental themes were also popular. 

But even for those who love Victoriana, this is probably too much and so where to start to get that touch of Victorian opulence?  On the floor, of course!  Rugs were often the centerpiece of the room and were also very highly patterned and the Victorians had a penchant for traditional and oriental designs.

Large rugs were common and they were laid to leave a border of polished floorboard around the room.  The Victorians were also very keen on runners and circular rugs, with the latter being used as a focus for an item of furniture such as a table.

Use heavily patterned wallpaper at least on one wall.  If you have the budget, invest in a Chesterfield sofa or at least one high backed chair. Furniture should be dark wood and a round or oval coffee table is also a key piece.  For those on a budget find a second-hand footstool - upholster it in a patterned fabric and find similar cushion covers.

In terms of accessories, damask or velvet lampshades in deep colours and a glass done bell to go over ornaments will add to the scheme. The finishing touch would be an item of faux taxidermy on the wall.

Here at FrithRugs we love our bold, bright, colourful rugs but we also appreciate, that for many people, home should be a peaceful and tranquil retreat.  Sometimes all you need is neutral and that doesn't mean boring - have you seen our Sophie range?

Well summer is officially almost at an end and at this time of year, many people will be hoping for an Indian summer.

Here at FrithRugs, the home of traditional rugs, we know that Indian designs remain bang on trend whatever the time of year. If you want a touch of India at home, one of the quickest and easiest ways to introduce a flavour of India to any room is with the addition of an Indian rug.

India is a hugely diverse nation and so it stands to reason there is not really one single style that will reflect it.  With a culture that is thousands of years old, it’s not difficult to introduce Indian influences - there are such a lot to choose from and as the home of traditional rugs, you will find lots of Indian collections and designs to choose from.

Modern rugs

And we haven’t forgotten those who want a more modern Indian rug.  We have a collection of bold, bright Kelims which complement the block colours found in our Dhurrie flat weave rugs, both collections feature wool woven onto cotton.  The dazzling colours found in these rugs have been inspired by Holi, 'The Festival of Colours', which is celebrated by people smearing each other with primary coloured powder and dye.

In fact, India is all about colour.  We love all the colours found in our Indian rugs - they remind us of the spices that India is so famous for.  Bright red, burnt orange, sunny yellow, it’s not hard to reinvigorate a boring British lounge with an exotic taste of India.  Once you have your rug in-situ, select a couple of colours from that and use it to add a couple more Indian pieces.

Perhaps the classic Buddha, or some paisley patterned cushions and throws on the sofa?  Don’t forget some well-placed metal hanging lamps or tea light holders and some hand painted elephant ornaments.

Summer is here and with a riot of colour outside – flowers in full bloom, glorious sun rises, blue skies, and so on, even the most magnolia minds can understand why injecting a shot of colour can enhance your interiors.

Accessories are a great way to introduce colour and it’s a quick and easy way to give your room a new lease of life without too much upheaval.  The great thing about using accessories is that they are relatively inexpensive and you can either keep your room colourful all year round, or you can pack them away for the winter and re-introduce them again next year.

Here at FrithRugs, we obviously have more than a soft spot for starting with a lovely rug for that colour boost, and you can complement the theme with throws, cushions, floor cushions, poufs, lighting and artwork.  You could go wild and use lots of different primary colours around the room - or, just choose one or two colours that you like, blue, oranage and yellow are lovely for summer - and select your accessories accordingly.

Finding the perfect rug for your shabby chic interior

Do you love #shabbychic interior design?  This interior decor style remains popular and finding the perfect home accessory to complement the look can sometimes be difficult.

Aubusson rugs are French carpets famous for their intricate and delicate designs.  They are flat woven and have the look of of a needlepoint or tapestry. The history of Aubusson rugs suggest the first looms appeared in Aubusson in the 1300s but their fame is largely associated with the Renaissance period. 

Originally based on Turkish design, in the late 1600s Aubusson rug designs started to replicate the motifs of Savonnerie rugs favoured by the King, however, thanks to the Aubusson weavers, they became available to others in the aristocracy of Europe.

Although Aubusson production stopped around the 1870s, today skilled weavers in China replicate these lovely designs and they retain their quintessential French look which makes them ideal if you are looking for that shabby chic or French farmhouse style look at home.
