How to decorate with clashing colours

According to Crown Paints decorating a room with clashing colours is a new interior design trend for 2017.

This means walls will be bursting with colour in clashing shades and dramatic patterns and if translating this trend to the rest of the room seems a bit daunting, we're here to offer some rules about this particular home interior fashion.

Use white

If you are a clash newbie, work with white. One of the simplest ways to combine patterns is to choose one coloured pattern combined with a white background.  Then introduce patterns of that colour.  So for example, if you chose a pattern of blue and white, buy in blue stripes, blue polka dots or blue florals.
Opposites attract

Remember the saying that blue and green should never be seen?   The reference is around two strong colours being kept apart, but they can in fact live in perfect harmony. The trick is to incorporate different shades of both colours throughout the room and then use accessories to include elements of both shades.

Be Bold

With so many beautiful bold home furnishings colours to choose from you won't be short of inspiration. From earthy shades such as teal and mustard to jewel tones of burgundy and red, don't be afraid to break the rules and mix and match.  A zebra print chair with an aquamarine throw is what colour clashing is all about.

Use what you love

Still not sure where to start?  Think about what you love or where you love.  Travel can be inspiring and if you enjoyed the texture and sights of Morocco then colourful tribal prints and motifs could be the starting point.  If your prefer British classics such as tartan, paisley and chintz, then reference these colours and designs throughout the room.
